GEP作为一种综合性指标体系，旨在科学评估区域生态系统，为人类福祉和经济社会可持续发展提供的产品和服务功能。武汉市蔡甸区根据《武汉市建立健全生态产品价值实现机制实施方案》（武政办〔2022〕92号），开展桐湖办事处重点生态功能区、重要湖泊河流、重要森林和湿地的生态系统生产总值（GEP）核算调查，因地制宜建立生态产品价值实现机制，更好推动生态资源优势更好转化为绿色发展优势。
基于GEP核算工作需求，调查团队对蔡甸区桐湖办事处进行了生物资源调查和监测，结合桐湖水草丰茂的特点，细化出农林牧渔产品、水资源产品、水源涵养、土壤保持、洪水调蓄、水质净化、空气净化、固碳释氧、气候调节、物种保育、旅游康养、休闲游憩等15项二级核算指标，采用GPS和GIS相结合的空间信息技术，充分调研收集桐湖地区土地利用、气象、水文、土壤等基础资料及数据，并补充开展相关调查和取样测试工作。

通过对蔡甸区桐湖办事处进行大规模生物资源调查和监测，共计发现维管植物90科217属264种，其中野生中国特有植物3种（黄连木、火棘和野花椒），国家二级重点保护野生植物2种（野大豆和细果野菱）；哺乳动物5目8科9种，国家二级重点保护野生动物1种（貉），中国特有种1种（岩松鼠），湖北省重点保护陆生野生动物3种（黄鼬、猪獾、果子狸）；鸟类15目37科87种，国家一级重点保护野生动物1种（黄胸鹀），国家二级重点保护野生动物8种，湖北省重点保护陆生野生动物20种；两栖动物1目4科9种，其中国家二级保护动物1种（虎纹蛙），湖北省重点保护陆生野生动物1种（中华蟾蜍）；爬行动物2目8科14种，国家二级保护动物1种（虎纹蛙），湖北省重点保护陆生野生动物1种（中华蟾蜍）；昆虫10目130科480种，其中《中国生物多样性红色名录·无脊椎动物卷》昆虫10种；鱼类调查到7目13科46种，浮游植物5门36种，浮游动物调查到3门26种，底栖动物调查到3门21种。
